Tracy Bonham and Saigon Kick

I came across a playlist titled: 90’s One Hit Wonders. I quick browse at most of the selections took me back. Back to the days of flannel shirts and baggy pants. And lots of denim. My favorite outfit in 8th grade was a killer pair of denim shorts (cuffed of course) matched with a long sleeved denim shirt and blue Nike high top boots. (My sister and I had a fight over that outfit once.) Back to the days of middle school and high school at South Summit.

It was fun to remember “back in the day.” It also brought on a feeling of angst or anxiety. The feeling was quasi-familiar. I didn’t recognize it for a while. By the end of the last sample song, I realized this was the same feeling I had pretty much my entire adolescence. Anxiety from not being cool enough, not fitting in enough. Anxiety over thinking everyone was judging me over my taste in music, clothes, hairstyles etc. Now, years later, when I am much more comfortable being me, it’s nice to see that I like some of these same songs just because I still like them. Not because I think I should. So in honor of the adolescent knot in the stomach, here are a few of my favorites from back in the day when generation X mourned Kurt Cobain (or am I part of generation Y?):

Mother, Mother – Tracy Bonham
Love is On the Way – Saigon Kick
Naked Eye – Luscious Jackson
A Girl Like You – Edwyn Collins
Your Woman – White Town
Rebirth of Slick (Cool Like Dat) – Diggable Planets
Fade Into You – Mazzy Star
Informer – Snow
What’s Up – 4 Non Blondes
Jump Around – House of Pain

jump up jump and get down, jump, jump, jump, jump, jump, jump, jump, jump….

Ps... my favorite outfit were lime green mc hammer pants with a matching lime green shirt. I have plenty of pics to prove this was my fav outfit. The best was when I brought my hot pink backpack along.
